The Wild Ones Greater Cleveland Chapter is launching a native pathway project for northeast Ohio! This project will allow residents and local businesses to participate in the larger native plant movement while increasing habitat connectivity for pollinators and other wildlife. Even if you're not sure you'll be volunteering on this project long-term, we encourage you to come to the first couple of meetings and weigh in on some key decisions about the project!

This event is for the students only. Ray Stewart introduced Wild Ones and taught middle schoolers (grades 5-8) from five different classes about seeds - what they are, how big they get, how they travel. Then each student planted a sunflower seed in a pot to nurture at school, then take home before school ends for the year. They asked numerous questions as Ray delivered an engaging and informative session. Diane Davis helped the students plant the sunflower seeds. Laura Ousky, Science Teacher, invited Wild Ones to participate in the Science Fair event and was very thankful for our participation.

From the Ground Up: Integrated Pest Management
Public Welcome Family Friendly Free Event Program/Speaker Presentation Hands-On/How-To Workshop Wheelchair Accessible Public Restroom Free Public Parking
Denise Ellsworth, program director for Pollinator Education in OSU’s Entomology department, will present on applying integrated pest management practices in residential native gardens.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will be the topic of our next learning session of our ‘From the Ground Up’ series. IPM is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties. These are the many ways to manage a landscape while avoiding the use of pesticides.
This program has two components; Part 1 from 6-7pm is an informal gathering to discuss specific issues that guests are concerned about. You are invited to bring in plant samples, bugs or whatever you think is harming your native plants. Denise will be on hand to assess these conditions and share best practices.
Part 2, 7-8pm is a more formal overview of IPM with specific attention given to concerns for native landscape gardeners and property managers. Please join us for this ecosystem approach to insect and disease management. Programs like this one are a benefit of your Greater Cleveland Wild Ones membership.
Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of problems in their own garden - such as a picture of a pest (insect or otherwise), diseased plant leaf, or other example - for diagnostic help.

Join Wild Ones Honorary Director Heather Holm as she explores the nesting habitats, life cycles, pollen collection, brood rearing, and general characteristics of some of the most common native bees in eastern North America, while highlighting the pollination of native plants and the mutualism between native plants and native bees.
When creating and managing thriving habitats for native bees, many factors such as seasonal phenology, nesting strategies, and flower preferences must be considered—and with approximately 3,600 species in North America (north of Mexico), there are many unique aspects to keep in mind when managing successful landscapes for bees.
